Alpha Squirrel EdTech Experts Attend Worldwide Apple Distinguished Educators Institute in Berlin

Five of our Alpha Squirrel EdTech experts recently attended the Worldwide Apple Distinguished Educators (ADE) Institute in Berlin to collaborate, share and learn with educators from around the globe.

Alpha Squirrels ADE Global 2016 Berlin

Alpha Squirrels Kelly Croy (@wirededucator), Kyle Pearce (@mathletepearce), John Shoemaker (@shoewee), Marc Faulder (@marcwithersey) and Monica Burns (@classtechtips) were among 400 educators at the invitation-only event.

Croy was featured as an ADE Global presenter. He showed fellow educators how he uses Reflector and AirParrot to promote a more engaged student learning environment in his classroom. His recent contribution to the Global Education Institute blog explained how his students use these EdTech tools to share and record mobile device screens.

“Berlin was fantastic,” Croy said. “I couldn’t have made it there without the support of Squirrels.”

The Worldwide ADE Institute is just one of the many education technology conferences and speaking engagements Alpha Squirrels attend throughout the year.

Check out some of the social conversation around the Alpha Squirrels program during the event!

Thanks to all Alpha Squirrels for their relentless efforts to positively represent, endorse and validate our place in the education technology world.

AirParrot Remote: A Tool For The Living Room

Couch-Potato-2

AirParrot Remote is a couch potato’s dream. It takes being lazy to a whole new level by giving you the full list of AirParrot 2 features and controls on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. That’s right. Leave your computer on the desk where it belongs because you don’t need it beside you to mirror your computer or stream songs and videos to your TV anymore.

Screen mirroring and streaming your computer to your big screen TV has always been cool, but was it convenient? It is now.

Without AirParrot Remote
Without AirParrot Remote, lounge time is constantly interrupted. Each time you want to stream or mirror something to your TV, you need to access your computer. So your laptop must be sitting by you on the couch, end stand or pillow. We cringe thinking about the brightness in your peripheral vision.

If the computer isn’t beside you, then you have to get up and walk to it.

Ugh. Talk about ruining the vibe.

With AirParrot Remote
Open the AirParrot Remote app on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. You will be able to control the AirParrot 2 software running on your computer no matter where the computer is located in the house. AirParrot Remote allows you to control your computer’s mouse and keyboard from your phone. So, not only can you begin mirroring your computer display and select media files to stream, you can also open a document, view it on your TV and begin editing it from your phone or tablet. Crazy, right?

Goodbye, nightmares
Do you know what couch potatoes have nightmares about? Effort. So we used AirParrot Remote as an opportunity to add playlist support to keep things ultra easy.

Previously, AirParrot could only stream one media file from a computer to Apple TV, Chromecast or AirPlay-enabled speakers at a time. Now you can use your mobile device to create large playlists full of songs and movies you’d like to play in order. Minimal effort. Optimal relaxation. You’re welcome.

For all the couch potatoes
We all have our couch potato moments. Things should be easy when you’re in couch potato mode. AirParrot Remote does just that – it makes life easier! It brings control of AirParrot 2 to your phone or tablet so you can begin streaming and mirroring your Mac or PC without ever leaving the couch.

Learn more about AirParrot Remote. You can purchase this iOS app in the Apple App Store ($6.99).

Note: Make sure you have the most recent AirParrot 2 update running on your Mac or PC to ensure compatibility with AirParrot Remote. The latest AirParrot 2 update is free for current AirParrot 2 customers. If you do not already have AirParrot 2, it costs just $12.99 in our online store.

5 Reasons You Need iOS 9 on Your iPhone or iPad

ios-9-logo1

Another year, another Apple OS update. What’s so great about this one? Turns out, a lot.

New features in iOS 9 complement last year’s iOS 8 release (a complete overhaul and redesign of Apple’s mobile operating system). iPhone and iPad users will enjoy iOS 9 for many reasons, including faster and stronger AirPlay connections. We’ve compiled five reasons we think you’ll fall in love with your Apple device all over again.

1. You can multitask like never before.

iPads are much more multitask-friendly in iOS 9. Users will be able to see multiple applications on their screen at once, change the size of each application and manipulate both apps at the same time: a dream come true.

2. You won’t have to pay for the news you need.

The News app will replace the Newsstand app. Instead of having to purchase subscriptions to publications, you can instantly follow publications like The New York Times, specific interests such as Technology and popular or personal blogs. Stay updated on topics and trends that are important to you, for free.

3. You can organize yourself better than ever.

The Notes app is vastly improved with iOS 9. This includes the ability to add bold titles, web links with previews, pictures, custom drawings and checklists to enhance the text of the note. Take thorough notes, make precise lists and jot down illustrations all in one app.

4. Longer battery life. Need we say more?

New software enhancements will add hours of battery life to your iOS device. You read that right: HOURS. Running in low power mode will also improve battery performance, meaning less scrambling to find the nearest outlet.

5. It’s FREE.

Getting all of these improvements and more for free is a no-brainer. Alongside a free compatibility update for current Reflector 2 users, upgrading to iOS 9 is a win-win!

iOS 9 Screen-Mirroring Support Has Arrived

Change happens fast in the tech world. We’re excited to launch our official Reflector 2 iOS 9 update – the world’s first screen-mirroring solution to support Apple’s latest mobile operating system.

The update is available to download now, and it’s free for current Reflector 2 users. You should expect all of the same great features you have come to love in our industry-leading software such as multiple-device mirroring, YouTube live streaming, screen recording with voice-over support, frame preferences, intelligent design layout and much more.

This update will allow teachers, gamers, business professionals and casual tech enthusiasts to continue to mirror once they update their iPhones and iPads to the iOS 9 platform. Anyone using an alternative screen-mirroring app will abruptly discover they can no longer mirror mobile devices to their computers once they update their Apple device to iOS 9.

iOS 9 Reflector 2

The reason for this is fairly “techie,” but we’ll give you a brief overview. Apple made some big changes to AirPlay in iOS 9. AirPlay is the built-in technology that allows iPads and iPhones to wirelessly communicate with external devices. It’s the software that communicates with Reflector 2, wireless speakers, Apple TVs and other wireless content-sharing technology on the market.

The new operating system alters the way AirPlay communicates with these external devices and breaks the connections. That’s a headache-filled bummer for unsuspecting consumers, right? Most definitely….unless they have Reflector 2.

Your Screen-Mirroring App won’t work with iOS 9 (unless you have Reflector 2)

It’s true. Every wireless screen-mirroring app on the market won’t work with Apple’s new iOS 9 platform. Don’t go slamming that panic button like an old-school alarm clock just yet. We’re here to tell you that we have a solution.

We’ve known since the earliest iOS 9 beta version that Reflector 2 in its current form, as well as every other wireless screen-mirroring solution, would not be compatible with iOS 9. Were we surprised? Not at all. Like any good company, Apple is always evolving and advancing its technology. It was time for us to evolve, too. We often tout ourselves as the creators of the first and best screen-mirroring technology on the market. How could we continue to claim to be the best if we couldn’t make Reflector 2 work with Apple’s latest operating system?

Here we are on September 10, 2015 — the day after Apple’s big event. Problem solved. Solution in hand. We won’t bore you with all of the technical details. Just know that you can rest easy and mirror your iPads, iPhones and iPods as you always have.

iOS 9 update

The official free Reflector 2 iOS 9 update will be released later this month. In the meantime, you can download a beta version of our software update if you just can’t wait!
