We hope you found a friend – 2016 Edcamp Roundup

Our 2016 Edcamp season is officially over, and we think this was our most successful year to date. We sponsored 34 events in 19 states!

In February, we revamped our Edcamp efforts and committed ourselves to empowering educators with resources to take charge of their professional development. We created a new system of submitting Edcamp sponsorship requests, updated our swag and offered higher monetary donations and special Reflector 2 deals for attendees. Most importantly, we built long-lasting relationships with educators. We appreciate all of the hard work that went into making each of these events a success!

We are honored to be a part of the experiences that help educators gain confidence, ignite their passion for education and share ideas with one another in a comfortable environment. These motivated educators inspire us to continue making products that help them accomplish their professional goals.

If you’ve been to a Squirrels-sponsored Edcamp before, you know that we provide fun goodies for you to take home, including Squirrels lanyards, prize packs with various swag items and free copies of Reflector 2. We also provide monetary donations to organizers for breakfast, lunch, refreshments or any other expenses. Speaking of lunch and breakfast, we’ve seen some tasty-looking lunches come out of our donations! Whether you attended one or many Squirrels-sponsored Edcamps this year, we hope our contributions helped make these professional development experiences the best ones yet.

We would love your feedback on how we can improve our sponsorship efforts as we gear up for 2017. Feel free to leave a comment telling us how we can make your experience better as an attendee or organizer.

Edcamp Foothills

September 10, 2016 was a big day in the EdTech world. Why? Because none other than Edcamp Foothills was happening, and we just so happen to know one of the sponsors. :)

You guessed it! This September, the Squirrels team was a proud sponsor of Edcamp Foothills in Valdese, North Carolina. Although this was the only Edcamp we sponsored this month, it was undeniably one to remember. The best part? We were lucky enough to have participation from two of our Alpha Squirrels (Nancy Betler and Megan McBain) at this professional development event. Not only were they able to spread the knowledge of Squirrels with other educators, but they were also able to come out of this day feeling empowered and motivated as an educator.

“EdCamps are an amazing trend in professional development where the participants guide the training.  As it says on the EdCamp Foothills website, ‘The learning at EdCamps is driven by the PEOPLE who choose to get up early on a Saturday and come out to learn.’  The participants not only choose the sessions that will be offered that day but also decide which of those sessions best meet their individual professional needs,” Betler said.

Edcamps are great resources to learn new tips and tricks that teachers may not have known about before. More importantly teachers are able to grow and strengthen their personal learning network with other teachers and EdTech companies. This is a great time for teachers to talk about what is and is not working in their classrooms, as well as gather contact information to collaborate after the event ends. Additionally, EdTech companies, like us, are always open to supporting and helping educators in any way that we can, which is why sponsoring Edcamps is something that is vital to the advancement of teachers.

“It is wonderful that so many different education companies understand the value of EdCamps,” Betler said.

Edcamp Foothills discussed an array of topics including Makerspaces, Literacy,  , BreakoutEdu, Canvas and of course, Reflector 2. They didn’t just talk about these items, they experienced it, and got to see them in action, which is something that is so special about the Edcamp movement. Most of the time, getting to see these topics in action allows teachers to leave feeling confident and ready to implement them into their own lessons.

“I felt like BreakoutEdu was something that I had needed to see in action before using it in order to make it concrete. EdCamp Foothills gave me that opportunity.  It left me empowered to confidently use it with my students,” Betler said.

Seeing Nancy, Megan and the rest of the educators that attended Edcamp Foothills feeling personally and professionally empowered is something that makes our job so rewarding. The impact that Edcamps have on educators is something that can last for years to come. We can’t wait to see all the great things to come from this day.

“EdCamps are definitely ‘created by educators for educators,’ and that is what I think makes the difference in their success. The people who run them are passionate about them as well as the people who attend,” Betler said.

The Squirrels Monthly Edcamp Roundup – July 2016

Summer 2016 has been one of the busiest seasons to date for us. Between launching a new product, attending the largest EdTech conference in the country and developing another new product that’s due fall 2016, we have remained committed to supporting educators. As we start to round out the warmer months in Ohio, it’s time to reflect on the Edcamps that made this summer one to remember.

  • Edcamp IT – Fort Worth, Texas
  • Edcamp Leadership Michigan – Jackson, Mich.
  • Edcamp Leadership Ohio – Gahanna, Ohio
  • Edcamp Literacy – Boston, Mass.
  • Edcamp PBL Ohio – Columbus, Ohio

We were honored to sponsor these events and hope our contributions helped exceed attendees’ expectations. Our donations went toward supplies, door prizes and most importantly, sandwiches (YUM)! We worked with five phenomenal Edcamp organizers who are passionate about what they do and want to share that passion with educators around them. Seeing that drive from these individuals inspires us every day to make software that promotes creativity and a fun learning environment.

Each of these Edcamps showed us what educators are talking about and what ideas are important to them. Here are just a few of the many topics educators discussed during the month of July:

  • iPad apps
  • Chromebooks and Google Classroom
  • New tech tools
  • Planning Edcamps
  • Becoming a connected educator
  • Formative assessment using technology

July was a great month of professional development for 550+ Edcamp attendees! The best part? This year isn't over yet! We'll be updating you about more Squirrels Edcamp sponsorships in the coming months.

The Squirrels Monthly Edcamp Roundup – May 2016

It’s that time again, folks! As we look forward to warm summer days, we reflect on all the wonderful professional development opportunities we helped sponsor at Edcamps in May. Our sponsorships spanned across Maryland (EdcampMayaF), Tennessee (Edcamp GigCity), Illinois (Edcamp Illinois) and finished up in our home state of Ohio (Edcamp Cleveland). Now that’s a recipe for a successful month!

Edcamp Gig City

Since we are not always able to attend Edcamps, we love to follow along with the attendees on social media to see what educators are talking about and, of course, how much fun they are having.

Among other things, our May sponsorship donations provided breakfast, lunch, coffee and even a salad/fruit bar for the Edcamps. We’re hungry just thinking about it!

The following discussion topics produced the most hype in May:

  • Blended learning
  • Google Classroom
  • Tech coaching
  • Tech to support reading
  • Flipped classroom
  • Classroom management with tech
  • 1:1 classrooms and managing student behavior
  • 21st century teaching practices
  • Student blogging
  • Gamification

All in all, it was a great month, and we are grateful to all of the Edcamp organizers who allowed us to be part of the experience! We are always so impressed to see how dedicated educators are to their work.

The Squirrels Monthly Roundup – April 2016

Squirrels April Edcamps

April was a busy month here at the Squirrels HQ. We prepared donations, coupons, prize packs and lanyards for nearly 1,000 Edcamps attendees in three different states and two countries!

Two of our very own Alpha Squirrels, Travis Lape and Kyle Pearce, coordinated Edcamp South Dakota and EdcampSWO (Southwest Ontario). With these two events in different areas of the country, we saw great insight on the challenges educators face in their classrooms, organic or technology driven.

Edcamp Ashland and EdcampNEO (Northeast Ohio) were next, and a little closer to home. We loved the opportunity to work with these local schools to learn how they incorporate technology into their classroom environment.

We didn’t stop there! We ended our month-long Edcamp journey on a high note with EdcampGroveCity and EdcampOhio. Although we could not attend either of these two events,  the attendees had a great day of conversation and problem solving.

Attendees were able to discover some powerful solutions to implement in their own classroom setting to create a fun and efficient place to learn. We’re proud of all the hard work accomplished by these schools and educators.

We want to give a shoutout to our Alpha Squirrels, Laurie Green, Kelly Croy and Zee Poerio, who attended some of these Edcamps to collaborate with fellow educators and tell others how they use our Reflector 2 desktop screen-mirroring software.

If you weren’t able to attend any of these Edcamps this month, here are some of the popular discussion topics:

  • Twitter 101
  • Tools for the classroom
  • Technology integration tools
  • Video creation tools
  • Formative assessment
  • Flipped classroom
  • Twitter chats
  • Classroom management\
