Meet the Squirrels: Llaran Smiles

This is the eighteenth post in an ongoing Meet the Squirrels series. Read more in this series.

Llaran is a native of Canton, Ohio and works in technical support for Squirrels. He spends his workdays interacting with customers to answer their technical questions and troubleshoot any issues they may have.

After Slingshot was released, the company went to a local sports park to play mini golf, drive bumper cars, have a picnic and so much more. The biggest event of the day, the go-kart race, was Llaran’s favorite activity so far. “The coolest thing I’ve ever done at Squirrels is the Slingshot Release Go-Cart Cup,” he said.

The team that Llaran works with is his favorite part of Squirrels. “The people that work here are fantastic and make coming to work everyday a pleasure.  Work hard, play hard.”

Favorite things to do in your free time:  I enjoy off-roading in my Jeep Cherokee and spending time outdoors with my children and dogs.

Favorite food: Tacos

TV show: Warehouse 13

Movie: Boondock Saints

Band/artist: Sublime

Your idol and why:  My father.  He struggled with alcoholism but overcame it and managed to provide everything we could have needed as children.  I am still not sure how he afforded the things he gave us.

Your motto:  You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.

If you could be any animal, what would you be?  A bear. My nickname among friends is Kuma; the bear from the Tekken video games.

When you were a little kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?  I have always loved the ocean and animals.  When I was a kid I wanted to be a marine biologist.

If you could have one super power, what would it be? Shape shifting.  It would be cool to be able to turn into any animal and have their abilities.

Meet the Squirrels: Nathan Wendell

This is the seventeenth post in an ongoing Meet the Squirrels series. Read more in this series.

Nathan is a native of Dover, Ohio. If you ever have trouble getting something configured properly or have any other technical support issues, he’ll help you fix them!

Nathan has enjoyed his experience at Squirrels in its entirety. “I have not been here very long, but my daily routine is pretty cool,” he said. “Aside from that, the days testing our Slingshot app before launch is something that stands out as a little cooler than the every day stuff.”

Like many others, Nathan claims the best part about working at Squirrels is the awesome team. “The other Squirrels make our office such great place to be every day.”

Learn more about Nathan!

Favorite things to do in your free time: Rock Climbing, yoga, hiking with my dog, and I would be a liar if I didn’t admit to spending a lot of time on the computer at home too.

Favorite food: Spicy food, any kind. The hotter the better.

TV show: My all-time favorite TV show would have to be Death Note.

Movie: Favorite movie is a tougher one but I would probably have to go with Goodfellas.

Band/artist: The Descendants would be my all-time favorite band.

Your idol and why: Bruce Lee for his books…  ok and for Enter the Dragon.

Your motto: We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts, we make the world.

If you could be any animal, what would you be? A dog as spoiled as my own.

When you were a little kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? I still want to be a ninja when I grow up.

If you could have one super power, what would it be? The ability to be in five places at once would be so much more useful than super strength, but I could use that power sometimes.

When you were a little kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? A professional motocross driver, this quickly changed when I wrecked my first dirt bike.

If you could have one super power, what would it be? Healing factor, which would allow me to recover from virtually any wound, disease  or toxin at an accelerated rate, and also slow down my aging process.

Meet the Squirrels: Matt Yanok

This is the fifteenth post in an ongoing Meet the Squirrels series. Read more in this series.

Matt grew up in Canton, Ohio and works in technical support!  He keeps Squirrels customers happy by answering support tickets, troubleshooting issues and doing everything he can to ensure customer satisfaction. He also steps in and proofreads documents and advertisements.

Matt’s coolest experience at Squirrels was a big first for him. “I had the opportunity to fly for the first time in my life while attending a company retreat to Lake Tahoe,” he said.

“The best part about working at Squirrels is observing and contributing to the ‘coming to life’ of new ideas. The process of developing applications is fascinating, and I get to come in every day and see progress being made. Every member of our team deserves to be here, and I get to watch us come together and do what we do.”

Favorite things to do in your free time: I relax and spend my time reading, playing video games and listening to music. But my hands-down, all-time favorite thing to do is get together with friends on Football Sunday and literally watching football for 10 hours straight.

Favorite food: Peirogies

TV show: The Office

Movie: Saving Private Ryan

Band/artist: The Beatles, duh

Your idol and why: Jack Kerouac. I’ve never felt more in touch with another person’s thoughts and feelings. His books really affected me in such a way that I’ve probably never been the same since I read them. I think he is the epitome of the human being in all its crazy, unique ways.

Your motto: “Being noticed can be a burden. Jesus Christ was crucified because he got himself noticed. So I disappear a lot.” - Bob Dylan

If you could be any animal, what would you be? An owl. I’m not really sure why, there’s just something about them. Being able to fly would be pretty cool too.

When you were a little kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? A baseball player. I played all my years growing up. Since I was a left-handed pitcher, I thought my chances were pretty high. I was also pretty darn good, if I do say so myself.

If you could have one super power, what would it be? I know it’s cliche, but I’d love to be able to fly. I’d get a big bang out of just being able to soar around up there.

October is Connected Educator Month 2014 #ce14

The amount of technology available has enabled teachers to connect in ways never before possible; social media alone has given educators an infinite amount of opportunities for collaboration and inspiration. Teachers are now developing as a whole and building the future of education as one unified, connected force.

Connected Educators Month (#ce14) was created to promote the use of social media, workshops, webinars and other events. It aims to sustain the continual growth of educators working together online. According to the Connected Educators website, the goals of CEM include:

  • Getting more educators proficient with social media to improve their practice
  • Deepening and sustaining learning among those already enjoying Connection’s benefits
  • Helping schools credential/integrate connected learning into their formal professional development efforts
  • Stimulating and supporting innovation in the field

We encourage all educators to get involved in the movement, build professional development networks and join the community! Read Edutopia’s Resources for Connected Educator Month 2014 for tips on getting started, ways to connect and DIY professional development.

Also, visit the Connected Educators calendar of events to see the hundreds of activities (online and in-person) that anyone can take part in to become a connected educator!
