Dustin came to Squirrels from Scio, Ohio. He works in technical support answering support tickets, reported bugs and issuing invoices!

Dustin’s favorite memory at Squirrels was the company retreat to Lake Tahoe last year. Favorite things to do in your free time: Video games, movies and relaxation.

Food: Steak

TV Show: Seinfeld

Movie: Big Trouble in Little China

Band/artist: Mastodon.

Your idol and why: Arnold Schwarzenegger, because he’s achieved more in his lifetime than most people dream about.

Your motto: No worries.

If you could be any animal, what would you be? An Elephant because they rule.

When you were a little kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? A professional motocross driver, this quickly changed when I wrecked my first dirt bike.

If you could have one super power, what would it be? Healing factor, which would allow me to recover from virtually any wound, disease  or toxin at an accelerated rate, and also slow down my aging process.

Meet the Squirrels: Matt Yanok

This is the fifteenth post in an ongoing Meet the Squirrels series. Read more in this series.

Matt grew up in Canton, Ohio and works in technical support!  He keeps Squirrels customers happy by answering support tickets, troubleshooting issues and doing everything he can to ensure customer satisfaction. He also steps in and proofreads documents and advertisements.

Matt’s coolest experience at Squirrels was a big first for him. “I had the opportunity to fly for the first time in my life while attending a company retreat to Lake Tahoe,” he said.

“The best part about working at Squirrels is observing and contributing to the ‘coming to life’ of new ideas. The process of developing applications is fascinating, and I get to come in every day and see progress being made. Every member of our team deserves to be here, and I get to watch us come together and do what we do.”

Favorite things to do in your free time: I relax and spend my time reading, playing video games and listening to music. But my hands-down, all-time favorite thing to do is get together with friends on Football Sunday and literally watching football for 10 hours straight.

Favorite food: Peirogies

TV show: The Office

Movie: Saving Private Ryan

Band/artist: The Beatles, duh

Your idol and why: Jack Kerouac. I’ve never felt more in touch with another person’s thoughts and feelings. His books really affected me in such a way that I’ve probably never been the same since I read them. I think he is the epitome of the human being in all its crazy, unique ways.

Your motto: “Being noticed can be a burden. Jesus Christ was crucified because he got himself noticed. So I disappear a lot.” - Bob Dylan

If you could be any animal, what would you be? An owl. I’m not really sure why, there’s just something about them. Being able to fly would be pretty cool too.

When you were a little kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? A baseball player. I played all my years growing up. Since I was a left-handed pitcher, I thought my chances were pretty high. I was also pretty darn good, if I do say so myself.

If you could have one super power, what would it be? I know it’s cliche, but I’d love to be able to fly. I’d get a big bang out of just being able to soar around up there.

October is Connected Educator Month 2014 #ce14

The amount of technology available has enabled teachers to connect in ways never before possible; social media alone has given educators an infinite amount of opportunities for collaboration and inspiration. Teachers are now developing as a whole and building the future of education as one unified, connected force.

Connected Educators Month (#ce14) was created to promote the use of social media, workshops, webinars and other events. It aims to sustain the continual growth of educators working together online. According to the Connected Educators website, the goals of CEM include:

  • Getting more educators proficient with social media to improve their practice
  • Deepening and sustaining learning among those already enjoying Connection’s benefits
  • Helping schools credential/integrate connected learning into their formal professional development efforts
  • Stimulating and supporting innovation in the field

We encourage all educators to get involved in the movement, build professional development networks and join the community! Read Edutopia’s Resources for Connected Educator Month 2014 for tips on getting started, ways to connect and DIY professional development.

Also, visit the Connected Educators calendar of events to see the hundreds of activities (online and in-person) that anyone can take part in to become a connected educator!

Mac Geek Gab Goes Nuts for AirParrot

One of the main advantages of AirParrot is streaming from older Mac and Windows computers to a compatible Apple TV, Reflector or other media receiver of choice.

Mac Geek Gab, a podcast featured on the Mac Observer, covered this topic in an episode last month. Hosts John F. Braun and Dave Hamilton gave a listener advice in regards to his skepticisms towards AirParrot.

The listener had an older Mac and a first generation Apple TV. He wanted to know if upgrading his Apple TV so it is compatible with AirParrot was worth it in terms of the movie streaming experience.

John and Dave recommended updating the Apple TV, and they gave advice for the process, suggesting looking through the Refurbished Apple TV store for cheaper, yet still high-quality options. Dave also highly endorsed AirParrot. “It works awesome; it really does,” he said. “I’ve had no issues whatsoever with AirParrot in that regard.”

Listen to episode 516 to hear the full review (starting at 45:14). Also, be sure to visit their website for archived podcasts or subscribe on iTunes and stay up to date on all things Mac!
