October is Connected Educator Month 2014 #ce14

The amount of technology available has enabled teachers to connect in ways never before possible; social media alone has given educators an infinite amount of opportunities for collaboration and inspiration. Teachers are now developing as a whole and building the future of education as one unified, connected force.

Connected Educators Month (#ce14) was created to promote the use of social media, workshops, webinars and other events. It aims to sustain the continual growth of educators working together online. According to the Connected Educators website, the goals of CEM include:

  • Getting more educators proficient with social media to improve their practice
  • Deepening and sustaining learning among those already enjoying Connection’s benefits
  • Helping schools credential/integrate connected learning into their formal professional development efforts
  • Stimulating and supporting innovation in the field

We encourage all educators to get involved in the movement, build professional development networks and join the community! Read Edutopia’s Resources for Connected Educator Month 2014 for tips on getting started, ways to connect and DIY professional development.

Also, visit the Connected Educators calendar of events to see the hundreds of activities (online and in-person) that anyone can take part in to become a connected educator!

Mac Geek Gab Goes Nuts for AirParrot

One of the main advantages of AirParrot is streaming from older Mac and Windows computers to a compatible Apple TV, Reflector or other media receiver of choice.

Mac Geek Gab, a podcast featured on the Mac Observer, covered this topic in an episode last month. Hosts John F. Braun and Dave Hamilton gave a listener advice in regards to his skepticisms towards AirParrot.

The listener had an older Mac and a first generation Apple TV. He wanted to know if upgrading his Apple TV so it is compatible with AirParrot was worth it in terms of the movie streaming experience.

John and Dave recommended updating the Apple TV, and they gave advice for the process, suggesting looking through the Refurbished Apple TV store for cheaper, yet still high-quality options. Dave also highly endorsed AirParrot. “It works awesome; it really does,” he said. “I’ve had no issues whatsoever with AirParrot in that regard.”

Listen to episode 516 to hear the full review (starting at 45:14). Also, be sure to visit their website for archived podcasts or subscribe on iTunes and stay up to date on all things Mac!

#squirrelsdoBVI14: Our 2014 Company Retreat

Earlier this year, the Squirrels team traveled to the Caribbean for the 2014 company retreat! We spent our time on the island of Virgin Gorda in the beautiful British Virgin Islands to celebrate the past year and plan for the year ahead.

Although we spent a good part of our week snorkeling, swimming, kayaking and relaxing on the beach, the most impactful moments of the trip came from our group sessions. We took time everyday to come together as a team and reflect on what we’ve done, recognized who we are now and created a mold for the future of Squirrels.

The retreat was a great way for the team to bond and rejuvenate. Now that we’re back in the office, we’re focused and ready to put our plans into action. Stay tuned for great things to come from Squirrels!

Check out some highlights from our incredible week!

Squirrels Sponsors a Teacher Through redditgifts Gift Exchange

Recently, reddit held its redditgifts for the Teachers 2014 gift exchange to help educators in need. Each year, teachers with inadequate budgets and resources reach out to the public for sponsorships and donations. Those who sign up for the exchange are matched with a teacher, given information about their needs and the necessary shipping information to send the supplies by the start of the school year.

As big supporters of education, Squirrels decided to sponsor a teacher through redditgifts. A lot of the Squirrels team is very passionate about music, and we were thrilled when we got matched with a music teacher in Iowa. The team donated $300 worth of creative, music and general supplies to help educate kids aged 4-11.

We appreciate reddit and the opportunity to make a difference in classrooms. Check out the Gift Exchange page on the redditgifts website to find this and other opportunities.
