How to Live Stream Mobile Gameplay to Twitch Using Reflector and Gameshow

Did you know that 800,000 mobile games are available on the App Store? That equates to over a third of the 2.2 million apps offered to iOS users. Did you also know that 75% of revenue generated from the App Store comes from mobile gaming?

That got us thinking: If that many games are housed on the App Store and they generate that much revenue, what technology are people using to show off their skills?

Social video platform services such as Twitch, offer gamers an opportunity to turn their recreational hobby into interactive gaming experiences that others can enjoy. Programs such as Gameshow, XSplit and Open Broadcasting Software (OBS) offer a way for enthusiasts to stream gameplay and connect with friends and fans over a shared love of games.

We decided to put Gameshow to the test (we’ve already tried out OBS) to see how it works with our Reflector screen-mirroring solution. Pairing Reflector with Gameshow eliminates the need for a lightning or USB cable to connect your device to your computer.

1. Create Twitch Account

To start your streaming experience, you need to sign up for the streaming service, Twitch. On the top right of the Twitch website, select “Sign Up” to create your account. Don’t worry, it’s free!

2. Download and Install Gameshow

Now that you have a Twitch account, you will need to download and install Gameshow (also free) to share your gaming with the world. This software is compatible with Windows 7 SP1 64-bit, Windows 8.1 64-bit, Windows 10 64-bit, MacOS X El Capitan and MacOS Sierra.

3. Stream Mobile Games to Twitch

  1. To start, open Reflector 2 to wirelessly mirror your device screen to your computer instead of using a cable. Connect your mobile device to Reflector using its native AirPlay or Cast technology. We recommend mirroring your device screen to Reflector first.

  3. Gameshow may prompt you to “Register” to be informed about new features and updates. Select “Skip” or “Register.”3.3.png

How to Live Stream Android, iPad and iPhone Games to Twitch Using Reflector

Social video platform services such as YouTube Gaming, Hitbox.tv and Twitch offer gamers an opportunity to turn their recreational hobby into an interactive gaming experience that others can enjoy. Streaming services are about more than just technology – they’re about cultivating and empowering a community of fans and gamers.

Live streaming is a popular way for enthusiasts to stream gameplay through a social network that connects friends and fans over a shared love of games. It’s more than just a spectator experience. Users can use audio and chat to enable streamers and their audiences to interact in real time.

Twitch, which is owned by Amazon, has arguably become the dominate live-game streaming platform. It last reported 100 million active users. Users can stream gameplay from iOS, Android, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, Chromecast, Fire TV and Nvidia Shield devices. The best part? It’s free to participate on either side of the stream.

So how do you stream Android, iPad and iPhone games to Twitch? What software do you need? And how can our Reflector software help?

  1. Create a Twitch Account

To start streaming, you need to sign up for the streaming service, Twitch. On the top right of the Twitch website, select “Sign Up” to create your account. Don’t worry, it’s free!Step 1B.png

  1. Download and Install Open Broadcasting Software (OBS)

Now that you have a Twitch account, you will need to download and install OBS (also free) to share your gaming with the world. This software is compatible with Windows, Mac and Linux. Below is a quick reference to a few of the interface elements we will touch on:

Scenes – This is where you can manage all the different scenes you want to stream or record. A scene is what gets transmitted in your video feed.

Source – A source is where you choose where your stream comes from. For example, a “Game Capture” source will take a direct feed from a game window.

Status – At the bottom of the window, there is a status bar that shows you how long your stream has been running, how many frames have been dropped, the stream’s frame rate and the upload rate.

Step 2.png

  1. Stream Mobile Games to Twitch

Nominations include Casey Affleck (Actor in a Leading Role), Emma Stone (Actress in a Leading Role) Hidden Figures (Best Picture), Moana (Best Animated Feature Film) and more.

Sling TV

Sling TV is one of the top ways that cord cutters can stream live TV without a cable subscription. Subscribers who choose the Sling Orange package ($20/mo) have access to the Broadcast Extra bundle ($5/mo) to watch live local broadcast channels, including ABC. Only want to use this service to watch the Oscars? You can try it free for 7 days!

Note: You can only stream ABC Live through Sling TV in select markets around the country. These areas include Chicago, Fresno, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, Raleigh-Durham and San Francisco. If you live in one of these areas, the ABC live stream will be accessible.

DirecTV NOW

One of the newest solutions for cord cutters is DIRECTV NOW by AT&T. This online streaming service offers you more than 60 TV channels, including ABC, for $35/mo without a contract (or you can try it free for seven days). You can use this service on most streaming devices, including computers and mobile devices.

Basic Antenna Option

Don’t forget the old-fashioned way! Since ABC is over-the-air (OTA) network broadcasting, it’s free to watch with a digital antenna if you live in range of an affiliate. Here’s how to choose the best antenna for you.

Pro tip:

Finding ways to stream live TV is only half the battle for cord cutters. After all, nobody wants to Natalie Portman receive an award on a tiny computer screen. Download AirParrot 2 on your Mac or PC to wirelessly mirror that live broadcast from your computer directly to an Apple TV or Chromecast.

Use Sling TV app or DirecTV Now in the Chrome, Safari and Firefox browser to stream the event. Then open AirParrot and select your browser as the “From” option. Select your Apple TV or Chromecast as the “To” option. This will allow you to experience all the action on the big screen.

The image below was taken from the AirParrot menu and shows you how to do this. You simply select your browser or application. Then select where to send it.

Cord Cutter’s Guide: How to Stream Saturday Night Live

“Live from New York, it’s Saturday night!"

You don’t need to be a comedy buff to know where this line is from.

Saturday Night Live has been one of the leading comedy staples on NBC since 1975, with celebrity hosts such as Steve Martin, Christopher Walken, John Goodman, Tom Hanks and Jimmy Fallon. Over the years SNL has contributed to some of the most memorable (and quotable) moments on TV with More Cowbell, Wayne’s World, Celebrity Jeopardy, Adam Sandler’s Hanukkah song, Chippendale’s Audition and the Church Lady.

Don’t miss a second of cold opens, Weekend Update or monologues because you don’t have a cable subscription. Here are three ways you can stream all the skits online.

Sling TV

Sling TV is one of the top ways that cord cutters can stream live TV without a cable subscription. Subscribers who choose the Sling Blue package ($25/mo) have access to a number of channels including NBC. However, if you only want to watch one particular episode, you can try Sling TV free for seven days!

Note: NBC live local feed in select markets, on-demand elsewhere.

PlayStation Vue

Good news, PlayStation owners! You too can stream your favorite channels all from your gaming console. With plans starting at $29.99-$39.99 a month depending on your market (for 50+ channels including NBC), Vue offers a great value for cord-cutters. This service is compatible with PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. Try it free!

Note: NBC is now offered in most areas across the nation, but it’s on-demand only. NBC live streaming is not offered nationwide by Vue at this time

DirecTV NOW

One of the newest solutions for cord cutters is DirecTV NOW by AT&T. This online streaming service offers you more than 60 TV channels for $35/mo without a contract (or you can try it free for seven days). DirecTV NOW offers NBC in select areas. You can use this service on most streaming devices including computers and mobile devices.

Note: Plug your zipcode into the websites for SlingVue, and DirecTV Now to see if you can get the feeds mentioned below.

Digital Antenna

NBC programming will be available over the air if you are connected with an antenna and in range of the local broadcast area. That means you can actually watch many of your NBC favorites for free including Saturday Night Live. Here’s how to choose the best antenna for you.

Pro tip:

Finding ways to stream live TV is only half the battle for cord cutters. After all, nobody wants to watch a hilarious Bill Hader skit with a roomful of people crowded around a tiny computer screen. Download AirParrot 2 on your Mac or PC to wirelessly mirror that live broadcast from your computer directly to an Apple TV or Chromecast.

Use Sling TV or DirecTV Now in the Chrome or Firefox browser to stream the event. Then open AirParrot and select your browser as the “From” option. Select your Apple TV or Chromecast as the “To” option. This will allow you to experience all the laughs on the big screen.

The image below was taken from the AirParrot menu and shows you how to do this. You simply select your browser or application. Then select where to send it.
